There’s a particular kind of project I’ve stopped taking on. The brief always sounds urgent — “we need a site by next Friday” — but underneath the urgency is something else: a fear that if you slow down, you’ll be left behind.
I’ve been on both sides of that fear. I’ve shipped websites in five days that I’m still embarrassed about, and I’ve spent six weeks on landing pages that converted at three times the industry average. The pattern is so consistent it’s almost boring: the slow work outperforms the fast work, every time.
What “slow” actually means
Slow design isn’t about being lazy. It’s about respecting the cost of every decision — because every decision compounds. A typeface chosen in ten minutes will sit on your site for two years. A button label written in a rush will be read a million times. The math is unforgiving.
The fastest way to ship something good is to refuse to ship something bad.
When I’m working slowly, I’m doing things like:
- Writing three versions of the headline and letting them sit overnight
- Walking away from the design after the first pass, then coming back the next morning
- Reading the copy out loud — every word
- Asking “what would I cut?” before “what should I add?”
The competitive advantage
Here’s the thing nobody tells you: most of your competitors are rushing. They’re chasing the same trends, using the same templates, hiring the same agencies. If you slow down by even 20%, you’ll stand out by 200%.
Slow doesn’t mean expensive. A two-week project done with care will always beat a two-day project done in panic, and the price difference is usually less than people think. The real cost of fast work is the rebuild six months later.
How to actually do it
If you’re a freelancer or founder reading this and thinking “sure, but my clients won’t pay for slow” — I hear you. Here’s what’s worked for me:
- Price for outcomes, not hours. When you sell hours, slowing down looks like waste. When you sell outcomes, slowing down looks like quality.
- Show the work-in-progress. Clients don’t fear slow — they fear silence. A weekly screen-cast does more than a Gantt chart.
- Build a “default no” filter. Most “urgent” requests aren’t. Push back gently and watch how often the deadline moves.
The deeper point
Slow design is really just respect — for the user who’ll spend time on your interface, for the brand that’ll live with the work for years, and for yourself as a crafts-person. Speed is a metric. Care is a value. Choose your values.
